Avocado Hummus – Nothing beats a real Guacamole, but this ultra creamy avocado dip is a great alternative for something different! Excellent option when avocados are obscenely expensive to make less go further!
It’s quicker to make and just as delicious in its own right, made with avocados, chickpeas OR yoghurt, lemon, coriander/cilantro, garlic and olive oil. Crack open a beer – snack time is here!
Avocado Hummus
While Guacamole done-right will always be my first avocado love, this creamy avocado dip is my 2nd favourite child. Reserved for those days when:
– you can’t decide whether to make a Guacamole or Hummus;
– have friends who prefer one or the other (solution: mash ’em up into one dip);
– you want to make a single avocado go further (for all those times avocados cost an arm and a leg!); or
– you want Guac, but lack the energy to do anything more than toss a handful of things in the food processor.
How to stop Avocado Dip from going brown
Best avocado dip storage tip ever to stop it from browning from Sprinkles and Sprouts – smooth the top and cover with warm water or olive oil. Stays green for 3 whole days!!
This makes a big batch compared to guac. One can of chickpeas pluys one big avo = about 2 to 2 1/2 cups of dip. Compared to 1 avo which makes as much guac as the size of the avo (minus the giant seed) – usually around just over 1 cup.
Is Avocado good for you?
An Avocado based dip is a far healthier option than the usual cream cheese based dips!
Avocado are packed full of vitamins, minerals, fiber and healthy fats. One of the few natural produce that contains a substantial amount of monounsaturated fatty acids which are good fats known to lower cholesterol and promote heart health.
With almost 20 vitamins and minerals, their potential health benefits include improving digestion, good for your heart, lower cholesterol, decrease risk of depression, and protection against cancer.
Avocado is also good for weight loss because it’s high in fibre and (good!) fats which will keep you feeling full for longer. If you’re a snack monster like me, Avocado Dip is a much safer option for your than any cheesy dip option!
But because they are 77% fat (albeit good fats), you still do need to consume in moderation.
What this avocado hummus tastes like
The recipe as written tastes like a cross between guacamole and hummus. The guac part coming from the avocado and coriander/cilantro, and the hummus part coming from the chickpeas and tahini.
But quite often, I use yoghurt instead of tahini which takes the hummus edge off slightly, which is why I’ve generically called this an Avocado Dip rather than Avocado Hummus.
Also, it’s so easy to adapt to your taste with slight variations. Leave out the coriander and it tastes less like Guac. Skip the chickpeas completely and use yoghurt, and you have a stronger avocado flavour.
For a kick of spice, try adding jalapeño or a pinch of cayenne. Try adding a can of green chillies, use lime instead of lemon. So actually, the only mandatory ingredient in this is… avocado. 🥑🥑🥑 😂 – Nagi x

Avocado Dip
Ingredients
- 1 large avocado, 300g/10oz whole (or 2 medium)
- 1 can chickpeas, drained (~14oz / 420g)
- 3 tbsp tahini (sesame paste) OR yoghurt
- 2 - 3 tbsp fresh lemon or lime juice
- 1/4 cup coriander / cilantro leaves, packed (some stems ok)
- 2 - 3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
- 1 large garlic clove
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 - 2 tbsp water as required
Garnishes (optional):
- Extra virgin olive oil
- Coriander/cilantro leaves
- Pine nuts , toasted (hummus-style!)
Instructions
- Cut avocado in half, remove seed. Use spoon to scoop flesh into food processor. Add remaining ingredients. Start with just a pinch of salt because canned chick peas vary in saltiness. Whizz until smooth, scraping down sides as required.
- Adjust: sour with lemon, salt, pepper, and dip consistency with water. Whizz again.
- Dollop onto plate. Use spoon to make swirls on top. Drizzle over olive oil, sprinkle to pine nuts, garnish with coriander. Serve with chips, crackers or pita bread, see notes for most amazing stay-green storage tip!

Life of Dozer
Took Dozer down to the dog beach the other day when I was taking a hot meal down to the homeless guy. I drove down the boat ramp so he could get a good look at the beach he so loves that he won’t be running on for months….. (recovering from recent knee surgery)
Didn’t stay long. Couldn’t stand the howling.😢
* For those playing catch up, Dozer completely destroyed his ACL (rear knee), underwent surgery and is 2.5 weeks into a 3 to 4 month recovery period. Challenging for this highly active dog!

Nagi, This is another first time recipe that will go on regular rotation. We’ve never been avocado lovers but with its health benefits it’s hard to avoid it. How nice that you can make a quick, healthy treat and a crowd pleaser! Thank you!

Woot! I’m so glad you enjoyed it Anka!

Excellent

Oh my God. We made this on Saturday and it was divine. I did use parsley instead of coriander. I seem to kill any coriander that I plant…. Anyway. We used the leftovers on toasted brioche (Aldi!) and everyone was sad when it was finished. Winner.
Ann says
sorry, I made a typing error. i meant to say how do I stop avocados going brown?
Nagi says
Hi Ann! The best way I know is to cut an onion in half and put it in a super airtight container with the avocado. 3 days later it will still be perfectly green! something about the acidity of the onion juices stops the avocado from browning 🙂 but it must be an airtight container. N x
Ann says
Hi Nagi, my question isn’t actually about the dip, it’s actually about avocados. How do I stop this beautiful fruit going green after I have had just one meal from it? I don’t eat avocado everyday (possibly 2 or 3 times a week though) and I would like to know how to preserve it’s lovely green colour. I have heard about putting lemon on it once it has been cut but I am allergic to citrus so I can’t do that.
Any suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated as I love avocados.
Thank you
Ann
Susan says
Thanks for another great recipe. I love how the avocado gives the hummus a lighter texture. Another recipe I have for guacamole suggests adding green peas so I added some to this dip along with the chickpeas and was pleased with the result.
Lorraine says
Hi Nagi, do you use greek yogurt in this recipe
Blaine says
Looks like a winner!

OK! 🙂 I have a few up my sleeve for classic things – like how to get the best herb flavour into roasted veggies, same for garlic flavour 🙂 Oh, and one I discovered recently from a famous chef – the best diet salad dressing ever made with TOMATO JUICE of all things! It’s amazing!!

Guac and hummus blend! What a fantastic idea! Here in Upstate New York, we get Haas avocados imported mostly from Mexico, or sometimes from Peru. They are the smaller variety with rough skins, and they have a rich interior. When we lived in Miami we had a much larger, more watery avocado variety. But that is not a surprise, Miami is made of water and rock!
I find it interesting that you blend the ingredients in your food processor because whenever I used my food processor for making guacamole, it came out too wet. So instead I use the Kitchen Aid mixer with the “coated flat beater” and it comes out a little coarser and dryer.
But obviously, this is different from guacamole as it has chickpeas and I will follow the directions and use the food processor for this dandy looking recipe.
I love reading your updates on beautiful Dozer’s recovery, he sure looks better and he deserved that great big birthday cake and Nagi, you get the Good Mommy Award for sure! Have a great weekend!
Nagi says
Hi Nadine! I never whizz my guac 🙂 I use a fork or pestle and mortar, I like it chunky the way it’s served in Mexico. We get Hass avocados too! They are my favourite. We also have Shepherd Avocados which don’t go brown, they are amazing!! N x
Nadine B. Adirondack Mountains, New York says
Yes, — that was the word I meant to use, “chunky” — I thought of it after I hit “send” — I love chunky guac and I was just given a gigantic pestle and mortar — so . . . I may christen it with avocados! I’ve never heard of Shepherd Avocados, interesting that they don’t go brown.
Two lovely sweet guys who worked in a Mexican restaurant in Miami taught me how to make guacamole: avocados, tomatoes, onion, cilantro, a touch of olive oil, adding salt and fresh lemon juice by taste, the salt and lemon juice had to balance the right way. I’ve used fresh lime juice too. Then you make the drinkies but that’s another subject another time! Have a great weekend!

Hi Nagi. I love your recipes. Been trying quite a few. I just made the avocado dip. Since l love guacamole. And I love chumus. Excited to put them together. I was just wondering how long it will last in the refrigerator? And can I freeze it? Thanks
Nagi says
Hi Barbara! Thanks for reminding me – I’ve added storage tips. With the coolest avocado dip storage trick ever, it will stay green for 3 days in the fridge!!
Barbara says
Thanks for the quick reply. You are amazing!! I already sneaked some of the dip. Delicious. And now I’m going to do your storage tip. Thx

Fantastic website and have made so many of your recipes. They and most of all tasty. Have all turned out fantastic and most of all tasty. How do you do the nutritional facts for each recipe and is it exact as I have two family members one diabetic (type i) and one gluten intolerant.
Thanks and keep the recipes coming.

HI Jackie! I use a calculator called Nutritionix and I cross check it with another one called My Fitness Pal 🙂 N x
Dahn says
Wow! $7 for one avocado!! That is highway robbery! Good thing the avocados are in season now!
How did you keep Dozer from jumping out the window? Do you keep him buckled in? I once had a lab that jumped right out of the moving car when she saw the beach and the water.
Nagi says
WHAT?!!! OMG was she ok?? Dozer is too much of a coward to jump out the car window! 😂
Bev says
Hi Nagi,
Howl with Dozer next time you drive him to the beach – great therapy for both of you.
I’m definitely making this for my next party. I hate having to choose between guac and hummus. Keep smiling.
Nagi says
Ba ha ha! Can you imagine what passer byers would be thinking if they saw a little asian lady and a giant golden fur ball sitting in a car by the water, howling together?? 😂
Bev says
I’d howl with you & Dozer!! Heehee!
Nagi says
🤣
Vivian says
Awww…sweet Doze, pining for the sand between his toes! Soon enough, furball. Sending a big warm hug from afar.
Bless you, Nagi, for being such a caring person ~ making warm food for someone else.
Great to now know how to make an expensive avocado stretch! They are about $2 Canadian here but… holy cow!!…never seen them on offer at a whopping $7!!! That’s when I head for the turnips!
Nagi says
I think I’ve only ever paid $7 for an avo once in my life, when I had a column with a magazine and I HAD to make something with avo!! It absolutely KILLED ME! But I first made up this recipe when they were about $4 each – still expensive in my books, especially when one avo does not make that much guac!
Gary in Arizona says
Wait…that looks like Avocado Humus! That’s exactly how I make my Avocado Humus, well, not exactly. May have more chickpea in it.
Nagi says
That’s what it is!! I didn’t know if people would understand that, so I just called it a dip. Well – people other than you and me! 😂
